We are excited to announce an exclusive Titleist 716 iron pre-release fitting event on Saturday October 3, 2015 10:00-2:00 at Independence Golf Club. This will be a unique opportunity to see the new 716 series Titleist irons, which will not be available until sometime in late November. As usual Titleist is being very tight-lipped regarding information relating to this new line but its our understanding that a total of 5 new models (AP1, AP2, CB, MB and T-MB) will be introduced. We will be posting more information as its made available to us.

This event is open to the public and we would encourage anyone who wants to take a serious look at this line to reserve a private fitting spot. These reserved spots are limited with the full amount ($75) being applied to the set purchase. Titleist staff fitters, in addition to Andrew Hodson a Golf Digest Top 100 clubfitter since 2011, will be on-hand conducting the fittings.

The Tour-only release is part of Titleist’s tour seeding and performance validation process that gives tour players the opportunity to test the final product — roughly 20 sets were shipped to Robert Trent Jones Golf Club — and potentially put the new irons in play.

John Peterson and Jason Bohn tested the irons on Monday and left the range with new sticks in the bag. Peterson, who tested 716 MB and 716 T-MB (3- and 4-iron) confirmed via Twitter that the 716 MB‘s were going straight in the bag.

Titleist unveiled the 716 MB at THE PLAYERS Championship and saw Jimmy Walker put them in play the very first week. Webb Simpson followed a week later, swapping his 680 MB irons for 716 MB at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Jason Bohn spent time working with 716 AP1, AP2 and T-MB. Bohn has typically played a mixed set of AP1 long irons and AP2 mid and shot irons. He left the range with a similar bag setup, comprised of 716 AP1 and AP2 irons, on Monday afternoon.

“I’m impressed with the new irons,” Bohn said. “I always look forward to trying out the irons, and these didn’t disappoint.”

Titleist declined to go into specifics about the new clubs with the launch still several months away. However, there were a few noticeable additions that immediately stuck out.

The biggest was the addition of a new T-MB iron. The 716 T-MB has what appears to be a tungsten weight that runs along the entire sole and the lower portion of the muscle pad. With the weight placed low and back, the additional weight boosts forgiveness and feel within the iron.

Tungsten could also play a big part in the design of AP1, AP2 and CB. All three irons have the word “Tungsten” stamped on the toe portion of the head. The addition of tungsten would be a first for CB, which features a re-designed cavity that’s reminiscent of the Titleist 990 with a thicker piece of material in the lower portion of the cavity.

Titleist’s 716 AP2 is forged and has the word Tungsten on the 5 through 7 irons, along with a re-designed cavity. Tungsten played a big role in the design of 714 AP2 — an iron that’s been used by Jason Dufner, Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson to win four major championships.

The tungsten accounted for roughly 20 percent of the head weight in 714 AP2. Adding weight in the heel and toe of the head increased the MOI in the long and short irons without increasing the blade length. It remains to be seen if tungsten has been used in a similar fashion this time around with AP2.
