The driver shaft landscape has changed dramatically this season. While a majority of pros on the PGA TOUR are still using shafts that range between 60 and 70 grams, a handful of high-profile names have transitioned into lighter options over the last few months.
How light are we talking? Carl Pettersson switched into a sub-40 gram Project X PXv39 a few months back at the Travelers Championship — an unheard of weight for a TOUR-caliber shaft, at 46 inches, a couple years back.
The quality and durability of ultralight shafts has improved recently, causing pros like Pettersson and Brandt Snedeker to switch. The 2012 FedExCup winner became the latest to put an ultralight, 45-gram UST TOURSPX VTS 4X shaft in his TaylorMade SLDR driver.
Snedeker’s shaft made headlines at the BMW Championship when he used it to shoot 8-under 63 in Round 1 at Conway Farms Golf Club. What most likely don’t know is that Snedeker has been working with the shaft since the Deutsche Bank Championship.
UST Tour rep Dave Cunningham was approached at TPC Boston about going from a 65-gram shaft to a 55-gram shaft, but Cunningham suggested Snedeker try out an even lighter option — UST’s 45-gram TOURSPX VTS 4X.
Looking for more speed and a tighter shot dispersion, Snedeker gave the shaft a test run in his SLDR driver and noticed a tighter dispersion and extra speed.
Snedeker opened the tournament with his old shaft before switching to the TOURSPX VTS 4X for the final two rounds of the tournament.
The TOURSPX VTS 4X shaft is a mid-launch, high-torque shaft that’s been out on TOUR for a little over a year. It’s currently only available on TOUR or through UST’s TOURSPX Dealer network.
